This project supports the development of Ph.D. level scholars in early intervention/early childhood special education. Six doctoral students per year receive support to gain skills in early childhood intervention, early literacy, social/emotional development, and positive behavior support. The program of study emphasizes cross disciplinary training, high rigor in research methods, and cultural sensitivity.
The need for this project lies both in the dearth of EI/ESCSE leaders who have the full range of skills needed to implement evidence-based practices, and the absence of Leadership Personnel in EI/ECSE who can both guide future development of effective practices and train new practitioners. The project combines faculty from Special Education, Early Intervention and School Psychology and is co-directed by Drs. Jane Squires, Rob Horner, and Ken Merrell. The strong research tradition of the existing projects at the University of Oregon provides an ideal context for training young scholars in intervention content, matched with high emphasis on rigorous research methods.
The students supported by this project graduate with an emphasis on early intervention technology that can be applied across the full range of disability severity, and all geographical areas of the country.
